Happy Fat Tuesday everyone! Today is a day to indulge yourself and why not include your four-legged friend in on the fun? The whole idea of Mardi Gras is to celebrate and gorge yourself before your give up vices for Lent. Typically only seriously practiced by the religious for pretty clear reasons, otherwise it’s more like an excuse to forget your calorie limit and have a good time!
The first treat recipe I want to share is from a dear friend of mine, Christina. Christina is an awesome mom to two-leggers and four-leggers alike. She sent me this recipe a few months ago and it very quickly became a favorite around the house. I like how easy it is to customize to your dogs’ tastes too!
“Bananas, almond butter, chia seeds, hemp hearts (some people add yogurt, I like to avoid dairy) as a base...if you want them more icy & less soft add broth for a more watery base. Now add veggies, meat, &/or dog treats & freeze in ice cube trays. 2 is a perfect serving but avoid carpeted areas as they do, obviously, melt.”
Dogs are omnivorous, so I like to bring lots of veggies into their diets. I feed them kibble twice a day (one in the morning, once in the evening) and give them veggie snacks throughout the day to get them going til the next meal. Recently we had lots of leftover celery so I grabbed it, some JIF peanut butter, and some craisins to make a dog-safe version of ants on a log. Once the logs were sufficiently covered with ants I set them in rows in tupperware and put them in the freezer for the day.
One of the easiest dog treats I’ve made in recent history has been sweet potato jerky pieces. It’s as simple as it sounds. First, preheat the oven to 170 F, grab a good knife, a cookie sheet, and a cutting board. Next, take a sweet potato and slice it into long strips about a quarter inch thick. Lay out the potato strips on the cookie sheet evenly, so everything cooks at the same time. Now, grab a book and cuddle up ‘cause it takes about two hours of cooking to get that nice jerky chew. Once they’re cooked and cooled, enjoy!
